How procurement teams should specify bulk herbal powders: MOQ, mesh size, moisture, colour, packaging and documentation — a checklist for manufacturers and wholesalers.

Write the specification before you ask for a price

A quote is only comparable if every supplier is pricing the same material. Before sending an enquiry, list the botanical name, plant part, target mesh, acceptable colour range, maximum moisture you can work with and the documents your QA team expects. Suppliers who receive a clear sheet return tighter, more honest quotes.

If you do not yet have an internal specification, ask for a sample at the listed MOQ grade and build your sheet from what passes your production trial.

Mesh size changes both price and performance

Mesh describes how fine a powder is. Finer mesh needs more milling and sieving, so it usually costs more per kg, but it disperses better in creams, face packs and capsules. Coarser powders suit decoctions, hair packs and further processing. Specify the mesh your process actually needs instead of defaulting to the finest available.

MOQ, slabs and landed cost

The listed MOQ is the smallest quantity at which the indicative bulk price applies. Above it, quantity slabs bring better trade pricing. When comparing suppliers, compare landed cost — material plus GST plus freight to your city — at the quantity you will really buy each month.

Packaging that protects the powder

Most powders travel in 25 kg bags. Hygroscopic powders such as moringa, hibiscus and blends should be in lined bags to limit moisture pickup. Confirm the packing on the quote, and plan storage that is dry and off the floor once the consignment arrives.
